Living with asthma

You may be surprised to know that asthma effects one in 11 children in the UK. In total a whopping 5.4 million people in the UK are currently receiving treatment for asthma.

What’s more, children with asthma who are living in damp and mouldy homes more likely to experience coughing and wheezing. This is because damp and mouldy environments lead to the dispersion of mould spores, which can aggravate the symptoms of certain asthma sufferers. If you are currently experiencing damp and mould problems in your home then it’s strongly advised that you consider ventilating your home in order to improve the health of any asthma sufferers living in your household.

Homes with high humidity levels provide the perfect breeding ground for house dust mites and researchers suggest that these are a possible trigger for up to 80% of asthma attacks!

Known as allergens, house dust mites, their droppings and rotting carcasses can trigger allergic reactions and asthma attacks in allergy sufferers. This is because when an asthma sufferer comes into contact with something that irritates their airways such as allergens, the muscles around the walls of the airways tighten, narrowing the airways and making it harder to breathe. In order to reduce the population of dust mites quickly and effectively, you need to provide adequate ventilation to reduce humidity levels.

The Sefton Council project was set up to support families with children suffering from asthma, EnviroVent’s PIV units were installed in sixteen homes, in order to improve indoor air quality and dust mite allergies. The feedback received from the questionnaires (sent out just after the units were fitted) was overwhelming. The majority of families involved in the project experienced positive improvements in the health of their children and in the indoor air quality, meaning that any previous mould and condensation problems were a thing of the past!

EnviroVent have a whole range of ventilation products that are designed to minimise the amount of moisture in the home. Positive Input Ventilation (PIV), a concept designed to filter fresh air throughout the home, can solve your humidity-based problems. For more information on good Ventilation or for a free Home Survey, why not call EnviroVent on 0845 27 27 807 or go to www.homeventilation.co.uk

The Green Deal – the future of energy efficiency or a health time bomb?

Are you a registered provider who’s looking for ways to help your tenants reduce their energy bills this year? As you may be aware the coalition Government is set to introduce legislation to make it possible for you to improve the energy efficiency of your housing stock through the Green Deal.  In a nutshell, the less energy consumed, the more money saved!

So, what exactly is The Green Deal? Well, it’s a way of making your housing stock more energy efficient, the offer is extended to affordable homeowners as well. Grants are now available for improvements such as loft insulation, cavity wall insulation and internal solid wall insulation. Home insulation is basically “sealing up” the property, as less heat will be lost through natural leakage, which is especially beneficial during those colder British days! Truth is, a quarter of a home’s heat can be lost through the loft and, even worse, a third of a home’s heat can be lost through walls. Therefore, it is argued that by having loft insulation, cavity wall insulation and so on, fuel bills will be considerably less… fantastic news, yes?

Without doubt, it is indeed good news for everyone looking to save their tenants some pennies, but without a proper home survey, other costly problems could arise; black mould and damp marks may appear on walls, along with condensation forming on windows. This is because high levels of humidity have become trapped in the home with no means of escape due to the property been completely “sealed up” as a result of various insulation methods. The perfect living environment will have heating, good insulation and the correct ventilation.  However, without ventilation, your housing stock will not be able to breathe and it will cost the Registered Provider time and money to solve the problem.

Mould and damp are obvious health hazards for homeowners and tenants alike, so it is essential that these problems are dealt with should they occur. If unattended, condensation and mould problems can worsen and begin to seriously affect the health of those living in that mould-affected property.  Therefore, be wise… don’t let adequate ventilation slip through the net!

Harrogate based company EnviroVent design and manufactures a range of energy efficient ventilation solutions ideal for dealing with problems of condensation, mould and damp.  They offer a free Home Survey and report, taking humidity readings in the property and providing advice on the unique ventilation requirements for individual properties.
