Have you found mould in your student accommodation?18/03/2014

Student accommodation used to have a reputation for being a little bit shabby and unloved. There used to be no raised eyebrows at the sight of mismatched furniture and no great expectations about the decor either. Today it’s a different story, thanks to Government legislation landlords are now legally responsible to provide a safe environment if they want to let a student property. However, even today, common problems such as condensation and mould, still crop up in student accommodation.

Mould in your student accommodation?

Imagine the horror of opening your wardrobe on a Saturday night, grabbing your favourite party gear and finding that it’s covered in mould spores. Apart from invading your wardrobe space, mould can appear around window and door frames, on walls and ceilings, in the corner of rooms and on your mattress.

Health problems caused by mould

Apart from being ghastly and depressing to look at, exposure to mould can also be a health hazard. It can cause:

  • Eye irritation
  • Coughing
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Allergic reactions

Condensation and mould are caused by poor ventilation, however, the following can make a difference to the severity of the problem:

1. Occupancy levels

If you live in a shared house with 4 other people, you will contribute more moisture through your daily activities (bathing, cooking etc) than 2 people sharing a flat. The moisture created by you and your flatmates has to go somewhere, if there is insufficient ventilation it will linger in the property simply because it has nowhere else to go - the excess moisture produced will leave the property vulnerable to condensation and mould.

2. Drying clothes indoors

Drying clothes indoors is hard to avoid especially in winter, you can help to reduce condensation by drying them on an airier, preferably throughout the day in a well ventilated room.

3. Inadequate heating

It’s a tricky one but try to keep the inside temperature reasonably constant for as much of the time as possible. Problems with condensation and mould are easily overcome with good ventilation.
