Investment In Local Workforce Pays Off in South Wales

From being a job-seeker to fully employed and now on this his way to becoming a qualified electrician, Dan Lacey is living proof that the relationships RCT Homes has forged with its contractors have been successful.

RCT Homes, the largest social housing provider in Wales, has a strong record in responsible business practice. Over the last six years, RCT Homes has remained committed to investing money, time and staff resources in helping to regenerate communities throughout the valleys.  By engaging with its supply chain through a framework process for contractors, RCT Homes has created new training and work opportunities for local people.

Twenty seven year old Dan Lacey from Rhydyfelin, near Pontypridd, is evidence that investment in local talent pays off. He began his career as an apprentice with RCT Homes’ social enterprise GrEW and prior to this Dan had been unemployed after leaving the army when he became a father. Dan worked as part of GrEW’s cleaning team for two years and was promoted to cleaning supervisor.

His career took a change in direction when he was successfully recruited by EnviroVent as an electrician’s mate in 2012. EnviroVent, the UK’s largest manufacturer of energy efficient ventilation solutions, installs condensation control units along with kitchen and bathroom extractor fans in many of the properties owned by RCT Homes.

Dan said: “I was out of work when I was given the chance to join GrEW’s cleaning team. When I left I was a cleaning supervisor who looked after a team of cleaners. Before I joined EnviroVent as an electrician’s mate, I had never done any electrical work before but when I heard about the EnviroVent job I wanted to give it a go.”

He added: “I am really enjoying the work and learning new skills, going through the training tests and getting on the job experience. It is important for me to have a job and work for a living as I have two children to care for.  Currently, I am working towards getting the qualifications to become an electrician with EnviroVent.”

Lynsey Holley-Matthews, corporate social responsibility manager at Meadow Prospect, the charitable arm of RCT Homes, works with contractors to help them develop a responsible business approach.

She said: “Dan’s story sums up how much of an impact businesses can have on the communities they work in. GrEW was a great opportunity for Dan to learn about managing a team and develop his skills and his confidence. It provided an ideal stepping stone for the rest of his career. By working with companies such as EnviroVent we are looking to create more opportunities to deliver support, employment and training for more people within Rhondda Cynon Taff.”

She added: “RCT Homes works with a number of large local and national companies and we believe a commitment to continued investment in local people will help to regenerate communities throughout the valleys.”

EnviroVent’s ventilation expert, Dan Bourke, said: “Recruiting this way was a first for EnviroVent and I can only say that the experience of working with RCT Homes and GrEW was excellent. It was a real example of working in true partnership. They provided us with CV’s, liaised directly with candidates and provided facilities for us to carry out the interviews. Employing Daniel Lacey has been great success, he is an asset to our business and we are pleased that we have been able to provide him with the opportunity to build a career with us.”
