According to researchers, our homes account for 25% of the nation’s carbon output, making them an important part of the Government’s plan to reduce the nations carbon emission by 80% for 2050.
The energy efficiency of new dwellings is covered by the latest legislation to the Building Regulations and the Code for Sustainable Homes but it’s a different story for existing properties. There are many householders who are looking at ways of improving their homes to make them as energy efficient as possible.
They may be looking into having double glazing or cavity wall insulation, or perhaps they are thinking of upgrading the boiler or a gas appliance. You may be surprised to learn that the average person spends up to 90% of their time indoors, 70% of which is spent inside their own home. It’s something we don’t really think about but ventilation really is a necessary requirement of our everyday lives. And, as we continue to improve our homes to prevent heat loss we are effectively ‘sealing’ them up and reducing the natural path of ventilation.
Why is it important to ventilate?
Good indoor air quality is paramount for a healthy home, without it dust mites thrive, condensation occurs and black mould raises its ugly head.
Why does condensation occur?
Take a family of 4, each person will contribute around 4 pints of moisture per day through routine activities such as breathing, bathing, cooking, etc – this amounts to over 100 pints of water vapour per week! This huge volume of moisture has to go somewhere, and if it remains trapped inside the home it will cause condensation (eventually leading to mould) and poor indoor air quality.
