Can Better Ventilation Reduce Heating Bills

Domestic energy costs are still at extremely high levels, and as such, it’s never been more important to do what you can to use your heating more efficiently to save money. Did you know that by improving the air circulation in your home and reducing humidity levels, it is possible to make your heating more effective and save you money on your bills.

Improve air circulation to reduce cold spots

Good ventilation ensures that warm air is evenly distributed throughout your home. This prevents cold spots and helps maintain a consistent temperature, reducing the need for additional heating.

In most homes, the thermostat that controls how long your heating runs through is in a hallway or other open area. This means that it is limited to switching the heating on and off based on a single place in your home. If air is allowed to circulate around the property rather than remaining still, the heating is more even, and the radiators can be turned off sooner when the desired temperature is reached throughout the home.

Whole house ventilation systems such as PIV (Positive Input Ventilation) work by drawing fresh air into the house at roof level and then distributing that air into the rest of your home. Some PIV systems feature a highly efficient heater integrated into the central unit which supplements your home’s central heating and warms the incoming air.

Reduce humidity to make your home feel warmer

Excess moisture in the air of your home can make it feel colder and result in you turning up the temperature when your home is already warm.

Using the extractor fans in your bathroom, kitchen, and other rooms with a source of moisture will reduce the humidity levels and make your home feel cosier.

Removing moisture from the air also reduces the amount of condensation that can form in your home overnight and helps to stop damp and mould from forming.

Using mechanical ventilation with heat recover (MVHR)

Some home ventilation systems use a heat exchanger to recover the heat from the air as it is expelled from the home and use this to warm the incoming air. Whole house MVHR systems are often fitted in new homes and during major renovations and remodelling projects, however there are also single room heat recovery ventilation systems such as the EnviroVent HeatSava, which replaces a standard extractor fan and captures the heat from the air from the room as the humid air is expelled.
