Five bathroom mould prevention tips

Avoiding mould growth in your bathroom means taking steps to remove the conditions that allow mould thrive - essentially moist air and cold surfaces that attract condensation.  There are steps you can take to protect your bathroom and the rest of your home from mould growth.

Dry wet areas immediately

Wipe up spillages and make sure to dry floors and walls after you take a bath or shower. If possible, dry wet clothes outside or in a dryer rather than on radiators, as the moisture from your clothes travels straight into the air. Never leave wet clothes or towels in the bathroom unless you can ventilate the room with fans or open windows.

Use a moisture meter

You can monitor humidity in your bathroom with a moisture meter. These can be bought from good DIY stores and allow you to track the amount of water vapour in the air of your home. Ideally, humidity should be between 30 and 60 percent, so if you find that levels rise above this threshold, you can take steps to ventilate better.

Avoid water ingress

Check to see if your bathroom windows are allowing rain to seep in and if the sealant around them is damaged. Regularly check there is no damage to your roof as this could also allow rain to seep in and damage the interior of your property.

Run the Extractor Fan During Baths and Showers

Whenever you are using the bath or shower, it is important to run the extractor fan, and to leave it on for at least thirty minutes after you have finished. Minimising the humidity in the air is a key step in bathroom mould prevention, as it is when water is allowed to settle that it provides the best environment for mould and mildew to grow.

Close the Bathroom Door

You should leave the bathroom door closed when you are using the bath or shower. This prevents moist air from escaping into the rest of your house where it can cause condensation to form in other rooms. Keeping the door closed also makes the extractor fan more effective at removing the humidity from the bathroom and helping with overall bathroom mould prevention.

Ventilate

It is important to let air circulate through your home. Keep internal doors open as much as possible and move the furniture away from walls. Open windows on dry days to let air into your home from outdoors, which will reduce humidity levels and therefore help to prevent mould.
