Bathroom Zoning

Bathroom zoning plays a critical role in ensuring safe, compliant ventilation installations within residential properties. Defined by the IET Wiring Regulations, bathroom zones help determine where electrical equipment, including extractor fans, can be safely installed based on exposure to water and moisture.

Understanding these zones, alongside the correct IP (Internal Protection - sometimes referred to as Ingress Protection) ratings, is essential for specifying and installing ventilation solutions that meet Building Regulations and industry best practice. This guide explains how bathroom zones are classified and how to select suitable ventilation products for each area, helping to deliver safe, efficient, and compliant installations.

All bathroom extractor fans are given an IP rating, which relate to which zones they are suitable for. The first digit of an IP rating describes its protection against solid materials such as dust and debris, and the second digit relates to the extractor fans protection from water and moisture. The higher the number, the more protection it has. If the first digit is shows an X this means that the product has not been tested against solid materials, this is usually because the unit will not come into contact with many solid objects.
