We’ve all done it. If it’s cold, if your neighbour’s doing some noisy DIY, or there’s a funny smell in the air, you shut your windows. Keep that nice, clean air in your house, and the nasties of the outside world away from your home. The problem with that is that with the super efficient double glazing and doors we have these days, you’re trapping all manner of things inside your house, turning it into a sealed box of potentially harmful elements. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are compounds that easily become vapours or gases. VOCs are released from burning fuel such as gasoline, wood, coal, or natural gas. They are also released from many consumer products: Cigarettes. Solvents. If you have asthma or another respiratory condition, young children, or an elderly person in the house, you should find out about Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). These are the groups of people who are potentially susceptible to the effects of VOCs in the home.

Ask any landlord or letting agent what their major causes of tenant complaints are during the winter time and one answer will always dominate – mould. It is no surprise that mould growth is listed as a Category 1 hazard under the Housing Health and Safety Rating system (HHSRS). In 2009, the World Health Organisation (WHO) produced a report on indoor air quality. The report highlighted that poor indoor air quality poses a risk to human health. This is particularly increased where tenants spend a large proportion of their time within their home, such as the elderly or disabled.

According to the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML), new mortgage lending in August was up 13% on the same period last year, making it the highest August level for six years. £18.6bn of new money from banks and other lenders went into the housing market last month, taking the gross mortgage lending in the year to £203bn.
